…Or wait until 2016. That’s how long it will take for Mars to get this close again. It will be at it’s brightest on Xmas Eve, so get out there and check it out.

Ok, a little late starting, but the Tech O’ the Week is Wireless Broadband. Why? Well, because it’s time to skool some of my peops who keep predicting that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon/Sprint/Podunk Wireless “real soon now.” Um…no, but the answer is way more complicated than simply chips, networks, and wishful thinking.
So, first, we’ll rewind the conversation a bit to look at the state of wireless broadband, not just here, but around the world. Then we will look at the various wireless data technologies to see where they fit. Then, a peek into the near future to see where things are heading. Then, the coupe de grace’ (say it like Bugs would…) will come on Friday, when I will tell you why lightning will strike my fat ass before Apple ships a CDMA phone.
In the end, you will be skooled.

…The Surferboi! Long story, and a long day. Once again, the ‘Boi forgets his own #1 Golden Rule of Gittin’ Yo Party On.
“STOP.”
That one little word would have saved me from disaster. But noooo….and I also forgot Rule #2.
“NO MIXING.”
Yes, the tango with Mr. Tony did me in. Beer is great for me, especially since I drink the good stuff with the B-Vitamins & yummy hops. But why oh why do I forget rule #2, especially after a 7AM wakeup call.
Rookie. This is Surferboi signing off. Heading back to the minor leagues.

This is a shot I took of the Roanoke Star around Xmas 2005. This is the picture of the day because my partner in crime Scott is coming to town from Roanoke. We drove up to this spot with my cousin Troy that Xmas, and took some pics. I was playa-hatin’ on Troy’s photography skills, so I took this shot to show him who’s boss. Easy to do with any camera, and the super-bright neon of the star against the night sky made it pop.It was very nostalgic for me, since we used to vacation in Roanoke as a kid. Looking forward to hangin’ with my homie this weekend. Party on, Garth.

If you run the calendar forward to about 2057, you may become one with the megacorp named Buy n Large. You can get everything you want there, like a WalMart on crakk. But it’s their line of robots that really shine. Wend-E the Wash Bot is my personal fave, since I hate doing laundry.
This bit of fun is brought to you buy the Pixar guys in advance of their new film Wall-E. This fake site from the future seems to tie into the story somehow, but details are sketchy. But any megacorp that does their annual report as a musical gets my proxy vote. Enjoy the trailer.

Ok, so one more nod to my homies from Nippon. Despite the fact that they may be inviting the destruction of our race under the carbon-fiber jack-boots of our robot overlords, Honda has been pumping more smarts into the beloved Asimo. The digital dude can plug himself in when he’s running low, and work with another homie to help people get they snack’on and drink’on propa. Probably can’t move like the coolio Qrio, but he’s ahite.
That’s fine. Laugh all you want. But when this dude’s grandkids come knocking, won’t be so funny then, will it?
You know, there are a lot of things I could say, but my Mumma told me to be nice. You make up your own mind.

Now this little ditty is a crowd fave here at SurferBoi World HQ. Not sure where I got it, but this mashup is one of the most bizarre/unique combos I have heard. If you want rumps jumpin’ out the seats and onto the dance floor, put this clip on and move the tables back. Gonna be some ass-shakin’ going on.
Folks know how much I love Hondas (they just work!). My days as a pimp daddy are winding down, so it’s getting close to the time where I can ditch the PDV (that’s Pimp Daddy Van for the uncool amongst you.) And the Honda CR-Z Hybrid is the new hotness I been keeping my eye on. A hot little hybrid, this ride will be cool and fuel-efficient, something I can’t say about the PDV. Due to ship in 2009, the CR-Z will be making it’s first appearance at the Detroit Auto Show. This model isn’t the only new tech Honda is cooking up in the lab. Check out what will be the first production fuel cell car, the FCX Clarity. (They need to work on that name…) But since it smacks of “OldsterMobile” the ‘Boi ain’t so hot on this model. Yet. Cool tech though.

Boy, you gotta love “analysts” (hmmm…starts with “anal”—go figure.) Seems that some lovely ANALysts are signing death warrants for Apple TV already. Even the well-respected ArsTechnica jumped on the Bandwagon o’ Doom. Ok peops, crack pipes down. Test over. You failed. Here’s why…
(But first a word from our Sponsor. I own Apple stock. Far from a dripping fanboy. I like making money. They made me a lot. Deal with it.)
Since when does Apple have to have a blockbuster hit for a product to be successful? They offer a $300 box that sells about 500,000 in its first year. No advertising. No promotion. Hmm…if you do the math, assuming a paltry 20% profit margin, they added about $30,ooo,ooo dollars in profit to an already phat bottom line. A Beyonce’-sized bottom line, knamean?
I think the guys over at RoughlyDrafted have it right. Apple already owns the video download market with a 91% total share in TV shows and movie downloads, this after being in the market less than 2 years. But what few folks have mentioned is this: Apple is on such a roll right now, they clearly have bigger plans for the Apple TV. Why would they even offer a product that depends on paid downloads only for content? Even with their market position, they can’t change the fact that people don’t want to buy movies as much as they want to rent them. So, will they start doing this? Time will tell. But in the meantime, they continue to add to the $15 billion dollar pile of dead prezidentz under their mattress. God I love money.
